Journey to the West - The Legend of Sun Wukong

Journey to the West – The Legend of Sun Wukong

Journey to the West is one of the most famous Chinese novels, written in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty by Wu Cheng’en. This legendary story is full of adventure, humor, and valuable life lessons. It combines fantasy, religion, and Chinese culture, making it a beloved tale for readers of all ages.

The novel follows the journey of a Buddhist monk named Tang Sanzang (or Tripitaka), who is sent by Buddha on a mission to bring sacred scriptures from India to China. But he doesn’t go alone! Tang Sanzang is joined by three magical and mischievous companions: Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), Zhu Bajie (Pigsy), and Sha Wujing (Sandy). Each of these characters has their flaws and strengths, and they learn important lessons along the way.

Sun Wukong is the most famous character in the story. He’s a monkey born from a stone and is incredibly powerful, clever, and playful. He’s also very rebellious, which once got him into trouble with the Jade Emperor, the ruler of Heaven. But after being punished and learning humility, he becomes loyal to Tang Sanzang and uses his strength and magic to protect the group from many dangers.

Throughout the journey, the group faces fierce monsters, cunning demons, and treacherous landscapes. These obstacles test their courage, teamwork, and determination. The demons often want to capture Tang Sanzang because they believe eating him will grant them immortality. Sun Wukong’s bravery and quick thinking, along with help from Pigsy’s strength and Sandy’s loyalty, ensure the group’s survival.

Journey to the West isn’t just about fighting monsters. It’s also about personal growth and redemption. Each character learns to overcome their weaknesses: Tang Sanzang grows braver, Sun Wukong becomes more disciplined, Pigsy controls his greed and laziness, and Sandy gains wisdom. The novel teaches readers about friendship, perseverance, and the importance of staying true to your goals.

Its rich characters and thrilling adventures make it a story that continues to capture the imagination of readers, even centuries after it was written. Whether you’re looking for action, humor, or valuable life lessons, Journey to the West is a must-read classic.

Video game – Black Myth Wukong 2024

You can find several adaptations of Wukong, but basically none of them (including the video games) follow the whole story or even the original story of the novel. Except one…this is :

Journey to the West, which was made in 1986 in China, and this is a perfect adaptation of the novel. Obviously, watching it in 2024 is kind of an unusual journey, but it’s definitely worth for a different experience.

About Author

I was born in 1979 in Hungary in a Hungarian family. I don't have Chinese ascendants, at least not in the past 150 years, before that I don't know. Since my young age, I'm interested in China. First, Hong Kong movies had an impact on me, then slowly, I went deeper into understanding and getting to know more about China and its vast history, culture, and society. Recent years brought up lots of anti-China, even xenophobic sentiment, which was led by misguiding media content in some countries. I'm making this website for those, who are curious about the real China, open-minded for the truth and ready to know and understand more about this great country and its nation.
